How to select the right domain name for your website in 2017

Sep 27, 2017

Your domain name (your website URL) is your online identity and is extremely important to business success in today’s global community. Your domain name is always visible to internet users.  If you choose a domain name which has targeted key words within the domain, your chances for success is increased.

How to choose a great domain name:

Great domain names are becoming harder to find. Some of the best ones are already taken. The key to choosing the best domain name is to choose one that is distinctive and speaks to what product or service you offer (as we mentioned above) by choosing keywords describing what you do as part of the domain name. Some business owners choose the domain name before naming their organization.  Others choose the domain name (URL) after they have named the company. The most important thing to remember is to choose a domain name (URL) which is related to your very own specific expertise.
Most SEO experts suggest that you choose a domain name with rich keywords. Use hyphens to help distinguish keywords in the domain, and/or using the geographical location in the domain name to help target the right customer base.  Rich keywords allow the search engine bots to be able to put you into the correct data base.  This will improve your SEO rank. You will show up in the (SERPs) search engine results pages in a higher position by using these important keywords.

Research before choosing a domain name:

Do your due diligence and research domain name usage. Find out what others are using in your industry and make a wise choice. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Choose a domain name which is easy to spell and easy to remember
  • If possible choose a domain name which represents your particular region.
  • What is the company name? This should be the first domain name (hopefully ending in dot-com)
  • The 2nd domain name should have at least two or more key words relating to your niche (your expertise)
  • Redirect all of your domain names to the main website.
  • Avoid choosing a domain name that infringes upon another brand

Choosing a dot-.com or another ending:

We suggest you go for a dot-com first if your customers you serve are at a global level.  If the dot-com domain is not available, you can go for a dot-net or a dot-org.  I am suggesting this because a dot-com is more familiar with those searching the web and is normally the first choice tried for those searching the web. If your company is located in the United Kingdom, your top choice for a domain should be dot-co-dot-uk.  If you are a non-profit firm, you should use a dot-org for a first choice.

Is it wise to purchase an older (aged) domain name?

Yes, because older domain names have more value for search engines. Website owners who are looking to sell a domain name is a great resource.  A good domain name should never exceed 67 characters and the older the domain name is the better when it comes to search engines.  But before you consider making the purchase, you should answer the questions below:

  • How old is the domain name?  Google puts a lot of importance on older domains and gives these domains a higher rank in the SERPs (search engine result pages).
  • What is the page rank? As the rank value increases, so does the value to Google.
  • How many back links are listed?  If you discover the back links are poor quality, then you might consider moving on to find another domain name.

From time to time it is wise to search for valuable domain names available for a cost-effective price.  Of course many of these domains for sale may be purchased by outside companies having a large budget for domain name purchase, once in a while you can find a steal.  You could pocket some profits by purchasing a few available.  Click on the link here from NAME BIO to see what may be available today.
