Minimalistic web design, the past and the future

May 17, 2021

Let’s discuss minimalistic web design. We will discuss the past and the future of minimalistic web design.  The minimalistic design approach started way back in the 50s as an art form.  In the 60s we saw this art form grow and it started showing up in other mediums such as abstracts.
As we moved into the 70s and beyond we were noticing fewer furnishings in architecture, even to include builders of home design.  They were adopting the minimalistic theory as they designed new homes, using cleaner angular lines.  Website developers noticed this new normal and began to adopt minimalistic web design as a new method to create cleaner, simple websites.  Today this theory is widely used by modern web developers.
As technology moved forward it was time to “rethink” design theory.  Building minimalistic web designs worked perfectly for those looking to work smarter and be more creative.  Using the minimalistic web design method proves to us that less can truly mean more!  The minimal design brings the website visitor more visual impact and provides entertainment quality.  As the internet became more popular, multi-media designers began to hone their multi-media skillset.  The minimal design theory became the “go-to” method for more modern designs.

Moving to geometric forms:

Minimalistic web design theory is influenced by geometric forms.  Form and function became more simple and less complex.  Artists were inspired by the many art figures from Europe, Russia, and Islamic cultures.  The art of minimal design touches not only web design but is used in other genres as we mentioned before to include new home architecture, music, and more.
Today most web designers are using the minimal design approach to build modern and innovative web designs.   When a website owner chooses to have a minimal web design, they can expect a simple and clean website.
As we develop the minimalistic website we will focus on menus, pages, and all elements needed to build a functional site.  We will add the crucial features only and avoid other elements not needed.  You’ll still see dramatic photography, modern illustrations, and great typography choices. The finished minimal design will attract the target audience.  Additionally, site promotion boosts site conversion rates.

Only what is needed, nothing more:

As we mentioned, the Minimal design technique uses only the elements which add to the site functionality.  No more bloated content, unnecessary items, just the bare essentials.  Building a minimal design layout requires the developer to be as original as possible and clever enough to avoid anything which is not in keeping with the minimal design theory. The finished site will provide the client with a truly inspirational design

The importance of white space in minimal design:

Negative (white) space used in minimalistic web design today works wonders to modernize the overall look of the site.   In the past, many of our clients considered white space as a negative.  However, the opposite is true.  The truth is more white space between elements helps to make the site professional and modern looking.  Adding white space also allows the eye to rest between reading content and the site is more visually appealing.  Additionally, the site will look more balanced and help your brand appear more organized and reliable.  And that’s what we all want.  We want our brand to be trusted to attract more buyers to the site.

Using color in the minimal design approach:

When choosing a color palette for today’s web designs it is important to limit color choices. It is best to choose a primary color and one more accent color.  Designers agree that monochrome color palettes are great choices for minimal design.  Consider pastel and earthy color choices for a visually appealing finished look.  Minimal design usually features no more than three colors in the completed web design project.

What about typography selections?

Since you’ll be using fewer colors within the minimal web design hierarchy, it is best to use bolder typography.  This is the best choice for modern website design. The designer will modify the size, shape, and style of the font chosen.  Choosing bolder, dynamic typography will help to complete the overall design appeal. Additionally, this will add more impact visually.
The overall user experience is going to be much better using the minimalist website technique.  Additionally, the web pages load quickly since there is less imagery and fewer graphics to load.  These elements are kept to a bare minimum.   This also means it will be a much easier browsing experience for users.  Here are few facts to remember when considering a new website platform:

  • 1/2 of all consumers on the internet expect your site to load in less than two seconds.
  • Your website conversion rate will suffer if your site does not load quickly
  • Sites built to be minimalistic in design use fewer server resources than other sites.
